How to play
- Guess the hidden five-letter word in six tries.
- Green: the letter is in the right spot.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word, but somewhere else.
- Grey: the letter is not in the word.

How to play Five, the daily 5-letter word guess
Five hides one five-letter word each day. You have six guesses, and every guess must be a real word. After each guess the tiles change colour:
- Green: the letter is in the word, in that spot.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word, but in a different spot.
- Grey: the letter is not in the word.
On Expert days Five plays in hard mode: any letter you have found must be used in every later guess. A new word goes live at midnight in your time zone.
Strategy tips
- Open with common letters. A first guess with two vowels and letters such as R, T, L or N tells you the most.
- Spend your second guess on new letters. Testing five fresh letters often beats chasing a single yellow.
- Remember double letters. Answers can repeat a letter, so keep words such as those with two Es or two Ls in mind.
- Move your yellows. A yellow letter cannot be in that spot, so place it somewhere new on the next guess.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I lose?
- Yes. If six guesses pass without the word, the day is recorded as played but it does not count towards your streak.
- What words can be answers?
- Familiar, family-friendly five-letter words, never plurals. Any other real five-letter word is accepted as a guess.
