How to play Crowns, the daily star battle puzzle
Crowns is a star battle puzzle played with crowns. The square grid is split into coloured regions, one for each row. Place exactly one crown in every row, every column and every colour region, and keep crowns apart: no two may touch, not even at a corner. If you have played other Queens-style logic puzzles, the rules will feel familiar.
A new board goes live at midnight in your time zone. Difficulty climbs through the week: easy on Monday and Tuesday, medium on Wednesday and Thursday, hard on Friday and Saturday, and expert on Sunday. Boards grow from 7×7 up to 10×10.
Strategy tips
- Start with the smallest regions. A region that sits inside a single row or column claims that line, so every other cell in the line can be crossed out.
- Cross out the neighbours. Once a crown is placed, the eight cells around it and the rest of its row, column and region can never hold another crown.
- Count regions against lines. If two regions fit entirely inside the same two rows, those rows are spoken for, and every other region must put its crown elsewhere.
- Look for contradictions. If a crown in a cell would leave some region with nowhere to go, that cell gets an ×.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a star battle puzzle?
- Star battle is a grid logic puzzle in which every row, column and outlined region holds the same number of stars, with no two stars touching. Crowns is the one-per-region version.
- Does every board have one solution?
- Yes. A solver checks that each board has exactly one solution and that it can be reached by logic alone, so you never need to guess.
- Is it free?
- Yes. Crowns runs in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with no account or download. Your streak is saved on your device.
- Can I play more than one board a day?
- Endless mode has unlimited star battle puzzles at four difficulty levels, and the archive keeps every past daily board.
